top What is azithromycin? Azithromycin, or commonly known as Zithromax or Z-Pak, is an antibiotic that is used to treat various types of infections. Azithromycin is an azalide, a type of macrolide antibiotic. We will exclude any participants with a known macrolide allergy. Azithromycin is not currently approved by the FDA for treating COVID-19, but we hope this research will help determine if it is an effective treatment for COVID-19.
top Will I be paid any financial compensation for participating? No, you will not be offered financial compensation. There is no charge to participate in the trial, and you will be provided the medication and materials free of cost.
top I live outside of California, can I enroll? Yes, this study is open to residents of the United States and US territories.
top I want to participate, but I don’t want to perform the self-swabs. Can I still enroll? Yes, you are still able to participate even if you do not wish to provide the swabs.
top I have contacted [email protected] or called but haven’t heard back. A study staff member will reply to you as soon as possible. The study email and phone number are monitored daily from 7 am to 5 pm (PST).
top Are you looking for additional study sites? Yes, we are actively partnering with laboratories performing SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing and other COVID-19 testing centers. Feel free to email us if you are interested in collaborating.
top Who are you currently collaborating with for this project? We are currently collaborating with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Pfizer, and the Stanford University Medical Center Clinical Virology Laboratory.
top I do not have a positive COVID-19 test yet. Can I enroll? No, you are not eligible to enroll. We require participants to have evidence of a positive test within the last 7 days in order to enroll.
top How can I help with your study? If you are ineligible to enroll, you can help by spreading the word about this study. Feel free to share our website and screening form with any potential people who may qualify.
top Do you test participants for coronavirus? No, we do not. We partner with laboratories that perform COVID-19 testing and other testing centers to share our recruitment materials with patients that test positive.
top How many participants will be enrolled in this study? We hope to enroll more than 2,500 patients in this trial.
top What are the common side effects from azithromycin? The most common side effects with this kind of antibiotic are diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, or rash. Each participant will be asked about any adverse symptoms experienced during follow-up.
